Meditation/ Mindfulness class - Ryu Ki Zen
Sensei Lisa Relic and Hayes Renshi have collaborated to plan a great new 6 month program. In Chitokia we practice a broad curriculum of exercises designed to develop ki, or life energy. These are gentle moving exercises. We combine this with Sensei’s Lisa’s deep knowledge of meditation to bring a wonderful new progam, that we have named Ryu Ki Zen.
Enquire at the counter about booking into this program, that will commence on March 9th, on Tuesdays at 10.00a.m.

December 2008 Dan Gradings
Congratulations to our two new Adult Black belts. Robert Fabien and Brett Logan were successful in gaining their Shodan Ho after a three hour grading. The grading involved review of all kata and applications, bo technique, throwing technique and then 30 rounds of sparring. All of this on a sweltering Saturday afternoon!
Abiela Walker gained her junior Shodan Ho. Abiela had gained her Dynamites Black Belt some two years ago, and has stuck to a consistent routine of training and leadership to arrive at this milestone.
Brandon Bailey, Brody Newstead, Tayla Hill and Amy Lovell gained their Junior First Degree black belts.
Catherine Ivanfy, Tegan McCaw, Chris Dean-Jones and Phoebe Lovell gained their Adult First Degree black belts.
Sensei Matt Robinson gained his Nidan, or Second Degree black belt. This is well deserved after a year of balancing his personal training with teaching classes and also attending University. Well done, Sensei Matt.
Some 22 Black Belts participated in the grading, showing the depth of talent and commitment we have developed together at the HVMAC. I was really proud of the standard shown and also the support and enthusiasm of the whole black belt group, who did everything along with the testing candidates, as well as the 30 kumite!

May 2008 Dan Gradings
Saturday May 24 saw 23 Brown and Black Belts gather for black belt gradings. Although no seniors were challenging for dan ranks, they all participated to test and review their skills , as well as join in the 30 bouts of kumite that black belt contenders had to complete. The quality of martial arts displayed on the day was amazing, and as chief instructor I must say I was immensely proud of the high standard, supportive atmosphere and fighting spirit of all who attended. We can surely say that we have built a quality school with a standard second to none.
Congratulations to the following students on gaining their First Degree Black Belts on Saturday.
Ryan Marjoribanks John Marjoribanks Mark Lowe
Congratulations to Catherine Ivanfy on gaining her Shodan Ho (Provisional Black Belt)

Our Junior Sports Star of the Year
Tegan McCaw had an outstanding year in Koshiki competition in 2007. Her highlight was her successful nomination as a finalist in the Lake Macquarie Junior Sports Star of the Year awards. Tegan was awarded a medal for being selected as a finalist and attended the annual awards ceremony.
Well done Tegan! We are all proud of you. Tegan has not rested on her laurels, as in May she will challenge for her Junior Black Belt and has been busy preparing for this next chapter in her martial arts journey.

First Cardio Combat Black Belt
Congratulations to Sue Ramsay, our first Cardio Cardio Combat Black Belt! Sue has been training since the Cardio Combat program was first launched by Sandy Sensei. She underwent rigorous testing, fitness, breaking, self defence routines and all Cardio Combat forms and emerged as our first provisional black belt in Cardio Combat. Sue's next challenge is to qualify for her First Degree Black Belt.
Sue has impressed us so much that we have asked her to join the teaching and administrative staff at HVMAC. She has already become a great asset and is emerging as an inspirational teacher.

Lake Training Day December 2007
Our Lake Training Day was again held at Bennet Park, Valentine, on the shores of Lake Macquarie. Nearly 100 students trained for an hour on the shore before going for a short run. We then headed into the lake for an hour of water training. The idea was to explore resistance on basic technique, but the laughter and splashing suggested that students were having too much of a good time to succumb to the rigours of training.
Following water training we enjoyed a sausage sizzle then some awards and brief speeches. All junior students received an encouragement medal for attending.
The award for Competitor of the Year went to Sensei Warren Tresidder for his outstanding results in Koshiki competition this year. Sensei Warren won the Grand Champion award at both the State and National titles
The award for Budoka of the Year ( the student who best displays the virtues of the warrior spirit) went with shouts of approval to sensei Kim Foley for her selfless and consistent coaching, organising and mentoring throughout 2007. There are many students who owe their success to the extra help and encouragment offered by Sensei Kim.
This is a great time to set your karate, study, financial and personal goals for 2008. Are you ready for a great year in 2008? We'll see you on the 7th January.
Have a Merry Xmas and a happy New Year from the staff at HVMAC.
